Al Sorat Farm is a small working farm near the pyramids of Abu Sir that serves as a base for a number of activities. The farm itself houses all of the animals (other than a camel) that might be expected on a farm along with a free-roaming but well-behaved pack of dogs of a variety of sizes and shapes. All of the animals other than the dogs live in paddocks so that they can live a normal social life. The horses and mules are, for the most part, rescues and all have been living at the farm for a long time, working with adults and children giving lessons and taking them for rides.
Individuals and families come to visit to unwind, play on the lawns, enjoy the animals, and have lunch or a barbecue. Schools in Cairo and Alexandria also make trips to the farm to introduce children to animals and plants in a safe enjoyable surrounding.
We do require reservations to visit the farm as it is important that it not become too crowded. Reservations can be made by contacting the farm at 0122 211 8386 on WhatsApp.
In addition to being a working farm that promotes education and relaxation, Al Sorat is host to a Facebook group, Please Be Seeded, for the harvesting and preservation of organic seeds and plants which we grow in our gardens and green house, as well as Rural Wellness Initiative Egypt, which is a charitable effort that provides outpatient health care and education about the keeping and nutrition of farm animals for the local farmers. Prior to the Covid pandemic, staff from the farm and the farm vet would be going out with one of our donkey carts to visit some of the small clusters of homes in the area to treat animals and consult with the farm families. For the past year and a half almost, we have been offering the service from our front gate. In a couple of months all of our staff will be vaccinated and we hope to get back to the old routine.
Our third resource, Beit Renenet, is a building containing space on two floors, a roof and a garden for people who want to offer courses or workshops to whatever community they wish. Each of the floors contains a large open space and a huge kitchen to enable cooking classes. The second floor is leased by Nawaya who are doing classes for village women who want to work from their homes. The ground floor will be used from time to time by a group based in Switzerland called The Flying Anvils Foundation who will be doing classes in cooperation with Cairo University to train farriers and veterinary assistants. The house was started just at the beginning of the Covid crisis and completed late last fall.
